As a member of the National Foundation For Credit Counseling (NFCC), Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater San Antonio (CCCSSA) provides reliable, professional, personal and confidential counseling. Each session is tailored to fit your specific needs and includes a review of your financial situation and determination of next steps. Here is an overview of the types of counseling services we provide.

Budgeting
According to financial experts the problem is not our paycheck but a lack of money management skills and solid spending habits. Contrary to what many think, a budget is not restrictive. It is an effective financial management tool that helps you to maintain financial wellness. Our certified consumer credit counselors will help you create an effective budget that will help you to avoid debt and over-spending. Bankruptcy Pre-Filing*
Our agency is approved by the EOUST to provide credit counseling prior to filing for bankruptcy. In a private 90-minute session your financial situation (bills and income status) will be reviewed. You will be provided with an overview of the bankruptcy process, and other options will be explained. A certificate will be issued at the end of the session. Bankrutpcy counseling and education services are offered in person or on the Internet.

Information you will need:

  • Picture identification
  • Copies of your most recent credit card statement(s) are requested
  • Last month's pay stubs
  • Knowledge of monthly living expenses (mortgage/rent, groceries, utilities, etc.)

    Position on Bankruptcy
    Our counselors do not answer legal questions about bankruptcy, or advise anyone to file for bankruptcy. This decision is made by each person after consultation with an attorney. Our counselors provide impartial and accurate information. Our staff does not refer consumers to attorneys or attorney offices.

    *Approved to issue certificates  in compliance with the Bankruptcy Code. Approval does not endorse or assure the quality of an Agency's services. These services may be available for free or at a rate based on the debtor student's ability to pay.

Credit Report Review
A credit report is a record of your credit activities, revealing how you handle credit cards, loans and payments. A certified consumer credit counselor will analyze the report for the client. This confidential session also includes budget planning and information about managing debt and personal finances.
Credit Report Review sessions are offered in person or by phone.

  • Picture identification
  • Copies of your most recent credit card statement(s) are requested
  • Last month's pay stubs
  • Knowledge of monthly living expenses (mortgage/rent, groceries, utilities, etc.)

Credit Score Analysis Program
A certified consumer credit counselor will help you understand your credit score, learn how to improve it and discover what effects different actions (like closing a line of credit, or credit balances) can have. You will be given an action plan to improve your credit score. The session includes a $75 fee with follow-up for 30 days, $125 with follow-up for one year.

Debt Management
An option for a client who is experiencing financial difficulty is to enter a debt management plan (DMP). A certified consumer credit counselor will help you create a plan to get out of debt. Through the Debt Management Plan (DMP), our agency acts as a neutral third party to negotiate payment arrangements with creditors.
Debt management counseling sessions are offered in person, by phone, or on the Internet

Housing
Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater San Antonio is a
HUD-approved housing counseling agency and a member of the Texas Foreclosure Prevention Task Force.

    Pre-Purchase
    Purchasing a home is one of the most important expenses you will ever make. It takes time and preparation. In your counseling session, one of our certified housing counselors will help you review your budget to help make sure you are prepared for homeownership.

    Foreclosure Prevention
    Working with services to prevent foreclosure may seem confusing and overwhelming for homeowners. Our certified housing counselors are specifically trained to help you determine the next best course for you if you are behind on your mortgage payments.     Reverse Mortgage
    Reverse mortgage counseling is available for senior homeowners (62+). One of our certified housing counselors will explain the advantages and disadvantages of a Reverse Mortgage that will include a comparison of Reverse Mortgage products. A Reverse Mortgage certificate will be issued at the conclusion of the session. A small fee is charged for this service.

Identity Theft Resolution
Our Identity Theft Specialist will meet with you to determine the level of assistance that best addresses your needs. You will be provided with a resolution process. While the initial session is free, additional and continued assistance is available for a modest fee. Identity Theft Resolution counseling sessions are offered
in person or by phone.

Student Loan Repayment

Because defaulting on student loans can have serious consequences, a certified consumer credit counselor will counsel borrowers concerned about student loan repayment.
